Traditional invitations, at least in the U.S. and most of Europe, have always been white or ivory paper printed with black ink, and always engraved or embossed. (You should see an expensive Indian invitation, though – that are delivered in boxes and include some remarkable things!)
Brides often still want the elegance and formality of the traditional invitation, but many others want something a little or a lot different.
Remember, the invitation is the first thing the customer sees for the wedding. Sets the tone of your big day, and gives guests a clue as to if the wedding is formal, semiformal or informal.
1. Anatomy of a Wedding Invitation
Traditional wedding invitations include:
– The outer envelope or mailing
– Invitation
– Reception Card
– RSVP card for invitation and reception
– An inner envelope to mail the RSVP card
– Map, directions, important phone numbers and also information on where to stay while in town for the wedding.
A more elaborate invitations also include an engraved card and a second inner envelope to hold the invitation – bringing the total envelope for three. Is all this necessary? Depends on you.
