The wedding cake is the real showcase for the reception. Cakes have become more creative, and also follow trends in fashion and design like never before. These are some of the best trends in wedding cakes in 2009.

Clean lines are king at this time. The smooth glass like finish icing fondant is still fashionable in most weddings, and a stand-out design feature is more popular than cake filled with a pattern of all parties. An interesting trend in wedding cakes has to do with the layers. The basic appearance of three stacked layers round remains the most common, but also seeing a lot more cakes that are square, octagonal, hexagonal, or a combination of everything and in layers. Offset layers that are stacked outside the gap slightly are also a hot look for wedding cakes at this time.

When it comes to decorating cakes, I really can not have everything your heart desires. There is nothing that a skilled baker can not create from sugar, gum paste or royal icing. That said, there are some definite trends for decoration wedding cake for 2009. Most are inclined to be mod and minimalist.

The most minimalist cake layers consist of four fifty-seven round covered in white fondant. The only decoration is a colored ribbon around the base of each layer and maybe a monogrammed medallion at the center of the layer. These cakes are kept very simple, without the cake topper. They are very urban chic, but may be too simple for some brides.

Mod design is also something that is seen in wedding cakes these days. Round in circles layered fondant is a cool effect. Simplistic sugar flowers are another big trend. They are often scattered on the cake in variable density, for example, as many flowers clustered near the top of the cake, gradually tapering to just a few flowers scattered at the base of the cake.

Another popular trend is to have a vineyard of sugar flowers laid diagonally on one side of the cake. Flowers can be great or small, or subtle colors, but are usually done in a single branch, leaving the rest of the plain cake. While fresh flowers are never out of style for wedding cake decorations which are not seen as much this season.

Brides are still interested in having a cake designed to complement this whole wedding somehow. For a very special look, fill a large white sugar cake "pearls" that are dusted with a powder of opalescent color. This is a fun and modern reference to the classic pearl bridal jewelry. If the crystal bridal jewelry is more your style, you can decorate your cake with sugar molded clear "crystals" in a geometric design. Note that the crystals are intended to mimic sugar crystal clear, not silver rhinestones. It's a more subtle style cake adorned the jewelry has been seen in recent years.

The great thing about a wedding cake is that you can have anything you want. So take a few pointers on the latest trends, or go in another direction, the choice is entirely yours. In the end, all that matters is that you love of how their wedding cake is, and that your guests love the taste.
